3-D Hereford Mappa Mundi

Color Enhanced Version of the Hereford Mappa Mundi

The original map, held at the Hereford Cathedral, is intricately created on a large sheet of Vellum. On the map, there are myths, legends, untouchable places like Eden, famous biblical verses such as Noah’s Ark, different beasts of the world, strange people of the world, and of course, towns and cities. It is said that the map contains more than 1000 drawings. Every two years, there is an elaborate plan to conserve the map and ensure the safekeeping of it. Based on the need to preserve the history of the map, a team of people decided to create a 3-D model of the map and make it into an interactive activity. The Mappa Mundi remains the most unique treasure in the world.

The exploration page could only be created through the use of primary sources. The Hereford Cathedral houses the Hereford Mappa Mundi which is a map created on a sheet of vellum. The Folio Society sought to create a digital 3-D scan of the map and through the project, hoped to find out other secrets and history hidden in the map. The map is currently preserved in the Hereford Cathedral that also houses the largest chained library in the world.

In January 2013, a team from Factum Arte scanned the map and recreated a high resolution 3-D print of the map. The team used a Lucida 3D scanner and a custom made mount to protect the Mappa Mundi from any contact or damage. The scanner used low intensity laser light and multiple cameras to take many frames. Through this, the Hereford Cathedral can attract more people and invite people to visit their attractions/exhibits.

Thanks to the effort of the Factum Arte team, the Mappa Mundi exploration page was successfully created. It has many features: zooming in and out, descriptive history blurbs, and different map types. The scan was thorough which allows people to see even the smallest details of the map such as the veins of the animal and scratches of Paris. It will help with further research of the time period and hopefully help bring about new knowledge of that history to others.
