SketchUp: My experience

SketchUp initially seemed daunting. It took me some time to get adjusted to the using a trackpad and working in three dimensions. After some YouTube tutorials and a bit of practice I became more comfortable. What I found most difficult was size and proportion. I was struggling to create the correct sizes of doors and other parts of the house. It got me frustrated that I was not able to achieve symmetry when I needed it. The roof of my house is quite complicated as it has chimney and is not a perfect pyramidal shape. I had to compromise and simplify my roof down do a general shape. This mean sacrificing the more specific shape of my house. I could see this potential software being used in physical geography. It can be used as an initial idea presentation tool for proposed idea for solving specific problems in communities. For example, designing earthquake proof buildings in an area susceptible to tremors. For people new to the SketchUp community, I encourage them to first become accustomed to creating simple shapes in 3 dimensions and maneuvering the mouse around it. Furthermore, I found that making mistakes and experimenting was the fastest way of learning the tools.

This is the view from the front of my house. What was most difficult was creating the entrance to the house as it protrudes out. To achieve this I first created an initial shape then started to add finer details.
This is a view from the back of the house. To create the garden and pool, I first built a platform and then used the push/pull tool to indent the platform forming the pool.
