W4: My Squirrel Map

I can’t find a way to visually embed my map app in WordPress, so here’s the link to it: https://carleton.maps.arcgis.com/apps/Editor/index.html?appid=62c1fdfe9eba4492bda5a3d48146a3bc.

My web app displays the geographical distribution of squirrels in New York’s central park. This is not accurate because some squirrels might be captured multiple times during the data collection process and their population may change as time proceeds. However, as journalist Alex Johnson commented, having some data is better than having no data at all – previously, zoologists and ecologists have struggled to come with such data.

Here’s how I made this web app. First, I downloaded the relevant GIS data from the Github repository: https://github.com/kwaldenphd/ArcGIS-Online-tutorial. Then, I used the ARCGIS’s online tools to map the GIS data points onto a real map. In the end, I applied the “heat-map” style because I was interested the population density of squirrels at different parts of the park.
