Mapping and Squirrels

A map that plots different squirrel sightings in Central Park as well as the average US household income in different areas. The data for the squirrel sightings was made public by Katherine Walden at Grinnell College.

To create the map, I started with a base layer of a street map. I then layered the squirrel census data on top, as well as the US household income layer. In customizing the view of the squirrel census data, I chose to represent each squirrel sighting as a colored point and I used 3 different colors to illustrate the ages of the squirrels which were sighted. In this view, the household income data doesn’t seem to appear, likely because it was an exclusive subscriber layer. However, this link will bring you directly to the web mapping application I created with this map and allow you to see the average US household data.

I like the fact that you had 3 different icons for each of the 3 different types of squirrels. This makes it easier for users to see the difference between the types of squirrels, giving a more accurate depiction of the squirrel census data.
