“Hello World” – A Role Reversal

Last week we had the opportunity to learn a little about coding, and this week we also did a light dive into CSS, JAVA, and HTML. The phrase that seems to have perforated all those lessons and truly, at least for me, marked their advent was “Hello World.” In starting the unit we were introduced to the greeting as perhaps the first thing that people learn to program into a computer to display.

Ultimately, though we were left questioning, who was doing the actual greeting. The programmer, or the computer itself? Based on the growing intelligence and use of technologies, I’d like to believe that it’s the computer itself.

During the development of my own website it kind of hit me, that developing my own website to take charge of my own virtual presence was a stark role reversal. Instead of the computer saying “hi” to me or the world, I was and am truly greeting the digital landscape for the first time. While the site might not be much right now, with some love and care, it might one day be a site worthy of pride. And all I can truly hope for, is that everything turns out all right.
