Passage Assignment

“Almost all the artifacts that we value as a society were made by or at the order of men. But behind every one is an invisible infrastructure of labor…”

Why I Am Not a Maker, Debbie Chachra

This passage grabbed my attention because it was something I had never thought about. As I started to think about this more, I realized there is invisible labor with all creations. Since I am a big fan of movies, I began to think of the people I value the most in movie production, the directors, which are essentially the people receiving most of the credit for the making of the movie. Occasionally I will recognize actors if they had a good performance, but I never think of any of the people making things work behind the scenes.

I was also able to connect this idea with some of my past experiences in web programming and coding in general. Personally, I have used Stack Overflow many times and I had never taken a moment to appreciate the people who give up their time (often by choice) to help others with their questions. Furthermore, I believe that there should be more of an emphasis on providing feedback through services such as Stack Overflow throughout the coding/computer science community because of how crucial it is for people of all skill levels within the field.

This term in Hacking the Humanities, I am most excited to learn about and use different software that is used to create simulations. I have not had much experience with this type of software and I am most excited about how it can be used in conjunction with other tools to facilitate a more hands-on learning environment for those who are visual and/or interactive learners like myself.
