Taking up SketchUp

SketchUp is a very user-friendly 3D software that allows you to create three dimensional objects. For the first assignment in the class Hacking the Humanities, I was supposed to create a 3D representational model of the outside of the house that I grew up in. With the instruction we received in class, the task was not too difficult, being a similar project to creating a dog house. What I did find more complicated were the details that don’t usually show up on a dog house. Windows, porches, and doors took me longer than the other more simple parts of the structure, like the roof. Initially, I ball-parked the length and width of the house, but after running into problems later with a complete roof, I used specifically divisible numbers to allow for easier measurements later. This turned out to be very helpful when it came to the porch. By using whole numbers in my initial measurements, I knew exactly what the ratio of the height of the porch would be to the height of the house. The tool I found to be most helpful was the eraser tool. I had too many lines showing up, and the eraser was honestly pretty fun in how fast it could delete what had taken half an hour to make.

  1. Looks good! Although it is hard to tell it is a 3D model from this angle. Yes, using whole numbers and precise measurements is the only way to fly if you want to produce clean results.
