SketchUp: First Impressions

In my Digital Humanities class, I was tasked to create a 3D model of my house using SketchUp. After only a brief demonstration, I set out to work on it. Although there were definitely some kinks I had to work out…

Keyboard Shortcuts:

If you’ve never used SketchUp before (or if you aren’t adept), then I recommend learning the keyboard shortcuts. These will speed up your modeling by allowing you to select tools and different views more quickly.

Rotating:

Another tool I wished I had learned about earlier is the ability to rotate an object. At first, I had to recreate each windows around the side of my house. After watching this video, I gained the skills I needed to rotate objects.

Most tools in SketchUp are very finicky. From a novice perspective, this makes modeling very difficult. But, it also allows more advanced users to create more accurate and detailed models. Putting extra detail in your model takes a lot of time. That’s why it is essential to learn your keyboard shortcuts! Good luck modeling, and have fun!

  1. I love the garage doors and crazy quarter-round roof on this house. The helpful tone of your post is really nice as well. Good work!

  2. The video is very helpful and people to recreate their house more accurately and a lot faster than figuring it out themselves!
