Quest through the Archives

Model Chosen

I selected Goodhue Hall to model in SketchUp as this structure sits close to home (live in Goodhue). I am also a fan of the window structure that wraps on part of the building and thought it would be a fun process to recreate. The balconies that are around the building as well made me eager to recreate the hall.

Archives Process

Getting to know the archives did not at first seem to be confusing, the link that was provided for us to follow under assignments was pretty direct. Click the link, search up your hall, and get plenty of images for your structure. At least this was the initial mindset when going into the research. I clicked the link and was taken to the Getting Started Tab. From there, I selected the Archives Digital Images which is sunder the Researching Campus History and Browsed under the G archives. Ultimately, through the process of searching there I was only able to find one image of Goodhue out of three that are apparently available.

Gathering Data

Retrieving data about the hall was a little tougher than anticipated because I did not expect the archives to be that confusing which was a bit overwhelming. Once you have gathered the data, metadata was new to me. The form in which we had to input the data we had gathered was pretty direct, what wasn’t was the actual research which is usually the case. This aspect wasn’t much different from previous research that I have conducted.

  1. I’m surprised that you could only find one image of Goodhue Hall. Maybe the other two images of Goodhue aren’t tagged or digitized and are in the library archives. In terms of the image that you found, did you find all the metadata that was needed? I know that some of the metadata that I needed was missing and that was a frustrating part for me. I look forward to seeing your model of Goodhue when it is finished.

  2. Genesis,

There are two different digital archives — Archon and the ContentDM repositories — which sadly contain distinct, yet overlapping collections of digitized collections. Have you checked both? If you can only find one image, you won’t be able to model very well, but since Goodhue is still standing, you should be able to fill in with more recent photographs if you can’t find many historic ones.
