Project Proposal: Teagan, Alex, Eli, and Hannah

The group for this project is Teagan Johnson, Alexei Thomas, Hannah Sheridan and Eli Offman.  For this project, we intend to compare Carleton College’s Off-Campus Study offerings over the years.  Carleton publishes statistics about the percentage of the graduating class that went on OCS, recurring programs, popular locations for specific courses, relation to popularity in major and minor that year, and more. Also, we discovered that the data for the program offerings is accessible from 2006 to present day by using the Wayback Machine on the OCS website which may offer more descriptive information. We intend to compile this data by hand in a spreadsheet and clean it through OpenRefine.  We will map this data by year using ArcGIS or possibly CARTO, showing the addition of locations over time. We hope this data will indicate changes in Carleton’s overall educational mission through time. For instance, when did the focus of Carleton’s education turn global? Is there a difference between where programs were focused two decades ago? Which programs have remained popular over time and what does this say about the consistent interests of Carleton students? What world events have influenced where students choose to go over time (natural disasters, social unrest, etc.).

We want to have our cleaned data set by March 5th. We want to have our data mapped by year by March 11.  Then, we will refine our maps for the next couple of days until the project is turned in at the end of finals.  Our visual inspiration for this project is this video. We also want to create a map that explores the addition of OCS programs over time.

Team OCS,

I think this approach is a positive correction from your initial idea — you are still focused on where Carls travel but now looking at to where as opposed to from where.

The past 14 years will provide a good start, but I would love to know if you can get any more data through the archives — make sure to ask the archivists and search the finding aids!

You might also consider checking the alumni information to see if there’s any correlation between where people go abroad during college and where they land after college.

StoryMaps will probably be your best bet for this project given the time you have, since making a video like 2043 will be much more challenging and less interactive.
