I am interested in thinking about convo in its other iterations, before discoursed surrounding the purpose of convo was as strongly focused around promoting inclusion and diversity in the specifically 21st political sense. How was the purpose of convo defined before many of the college’s official language circled around these sorts of ideas? From a cursory skim over the documents, I can see that religious life was more closely tied to convos than it is now, and convos used to be mandatory. How do these two factors change the purpose of convo?
I am also part of the Convocation Committee, so I see what happens behind the scenes in selecting speakers in the current moment. I would love to learn more about how this process has changed and manifested different kinds of speakers.
