Digital Humanites and Coding discussion

Humanity side of the digital world

I believe that coding should not be an absolute must know in order to actively participate in the digital humanities world. I think that everyone should know at least some code in this world today because of the enormous amount of things that use coding and just how much coding is relevant in our own very lives without a majority of the population knowing that coding indeed is apart of our daily lives. I think that an advanced skill in coding shouldn’t be necessary in this field especially since coding is so complex and random at times. “Thus, students should learn to program, but they should not let their inability to program prevent them from engaging with the computer sciences.” As Donahue has stated here relates to what I said as well in that he knows that coding is extremely difficult to understand but the basics of coding are easy enough to memorize and know and in having this basic knowledge it won’t scare people from entering the computer science world and the digital humanities world just because they don’t necessarily have an advanced knowledge in coding. I think that one could be just as effective in the digital humanities world without the complete knowledge of the coding world as maybe an advanced coder would be effective. Coding does not completely encapsulate the whole computer science realm and this is something that people should know so that more people will be more willing to try out computer science!

My Experience with Coding

My experience with coding has not been a pleasant one I would say… In my high school I took a physics class and at the end of the year we dove into the coding world. We were given a book on how to type the code into our mac laptops and we told the computer what to do to these lights we had connected to the laptop. The book was pretty easy to follow and coding seemed pretty easy in that all we had to do was follow the steps and type the commands in exactly as the book said to and it worked pretty well and I had a lot of fun doing it as well. But in this class the coding world became more complex and confusing than I thought it was going to be. The whole CSS and JavaScript and HTML world are still confusing to me and I have a hard time remembering the exact commands to get the right output. The CSS world still is very confusing to me and the JavaScript seems a little less confusing because the commands seem similar to the ones I did in my physics class. I hope that for this class we won’t have to have an advanced knowledge of coding because I am still kind of lost when it comes to coding! I did use JS Bin to experiment with CSS, HTML, and JavaScript but I wasn’t able to export the link without a pro account and I cannot screen shot for some reason on my desktop and when I tried to download the file and export it onto the add media button it said the file was not allowed for security reasons, but I did try to get a picture!
