Carl Countries

My freshman year roommate came from Atlanta, Georgia and often took public transportation and interacted with locations around the city. I, however, grew up in a tiny town in Nebraska that didn’t have stoplights in some areas, let alone public transport. Carleton’s geographic diversity is growing as more and more international students come in. Over time, I think it’s important to see where Carls come from, and how that could shape their experiences here.

My group project hopes to be able to accomplish that goal by pulling data from old Carleton Zoobooks and mapping their hometown locations. You can read more about the project here, and perhaps contribute some ideas!

  1. Sounds like a rad project! I’m curious about how the map will look. Will you drop your points on the capitols of each state/country? Or will you make something similar to the infographic in the back of this years zoobook? I think an interactive version of that infographic would be a good way to display your data.

    • Clarissa,

I think we’re planning on doing an interactive version of the info-graphic. It’s a lot more visual and fun.

  2. I like this idea for a project as it can tell us a lot about the whole community at Carleton. Are you planning on analyzing the data that you get to see if the geographic distribution of Carleton students has changed over time or are you going to just look at plotting the data that you get from the Zoobooks? I think it would be interesting to look at how the geographic distribution has changed over time, but that might not be possible from the data that is collected. I can’t wait to see how your project turns out/

    • Nardij,

First, we’re planning on just plotting the data we get from Zoobooks. We haven’t really talked details about how we’re gonna get the information about the environmental changes. But i assum we can use data from the Carletonian and things like that.
