Although I frequently go into town to grocery shop, thrift, or sit in a coffee shop, I rarely venture as far as 7th Street, so I was excited to explore a new area as I embarked on my walk. Beginning in front of Paisley Gardens across from the Family Fare, the first thing that caught my eye was the small strip mall at the intersection of 7th and Division. In general, this corner of Northfield is a more recent development and has the look and feel of the suburbs.

Parking lot of a relatively recently developed strip mall

As I continued around the corner, I stopped to read a quote inscribed into the sidewalk (a city-wide initiative in Northfield). Suddenly, I heard shooting water and looked up to find a brown liquid pouring out onto the sidewalk. I am still unsure about the source of the liquid, but it was very alarming and slightly disturbing to watch a mysterious substance run out from a pipe. I also noticed that the sidewalk curved in a very unique way on this stretch.

Brown liquid shoots from a pipe and onto the sidewalk next to me

A portion of the sidewalk that slopes down towards the road and then shifts to slope down towards the rest of the sidewalk

Once I reached Water Street, I was surprised to see two residential homes in an otherwise commercial area. I looked into this more after returning from my walk and could not find information about the drive-thru but found a document dating the original residential property on the lot to 1875.

The building that resembles a drive-thru with the driveway on the right

Evidence of drive-thru sign at the exit of the driveway

During the next section of my walk, I got a closer look at some businesses that I had never noticed or visited. First, The Key is an organization in Northfield that I had heard of in classes before, but it wasn’t until this walk that I stopped to look at what it is. The Key is a community center for Northfield youth under 21 where kids can access resources and build community with each other. I could see musical instruments through the windows and it looked like a cool space to hang out. Second, I pride myself on being up-to-date with the businesses downtown, but King Claw Land took my by surprise. With a prime location on Division, I’m unsure about how much interest Northfield residents have in claw machines and am curious to see how long this business will last. Finally, I got a closer look at the brand new Loon Distillery and Pizzeria on 5th. They have a huge space and I’m excited to try their pizza; it seems like a great addition to the Northfield food scene. Their building is the former home of Northfield News, which I learned suffered a great fire in 1964 and used to reside on Division (here is a photo of the debris covered in snow).

Me taking a selfie in the window of the new Loon Distillery and Pizzeria.

As I passed Forget Me Not Florist on Water and 5th, the overwhelming scent of fall spice wafted toward me and a motorcyclist loudly revved by. I was surprised by how lively Northfield was at 3pm on a Wednesday–people were out running errands and the roads had consistent traffic.

Nearing the end of my walk, I went into the alley behind Division to get a new perspective on the downtown-facing buildings. They looked a lot different from the back than from the front–a lot less “pretty.” There were some renovations going on above the Northfield Mini Storage that I was unable to see from the front, and the vats for distilling behind Loon were prominent.

View of the back of Division Street buildings and Loon

My block of Division between 5th and 6th is really the end of historic downtown Northfield. Currently, it houses Tolle Fine Art. Dating back to 1907, it was previously a grocery store, general store, funeral home and upholstery shop.

A landscape view of my section of historic Division Street

I looked into the history of 500 Division Street, which is on the corner of 5th and appears to be one of the oldest buildings, to see how it has changed over time.
