From the Commonplace Book:

As I read through the New Market Early History folder at the Scott County Historical Society, I was repeatedly struck by the details outlining the geographic paths taken and locations settled by those who first arrived in area that would become New Market. Given specific locations of the individual farms and businesses, it seemed surprisingly plausible to be able to draft a timeline map showing the patterns of settlement for the town of Elko and New Market. In my readings, I also found the Native histories of the area, including the directions in which the Dakota arrived, thus allowing me to visualize the human patterns of movement and residency which occurred within this quadrangle over time. The goal of this map is to explore how the landscape influenced and predetermined both path of arrival and settlement choices by those people who first inhabited and those who continue to inhabit this land.
