Hi everyone! My name is Jason and I’m a senior Sociology & Anthropology major at Carleton College, also the co-author of this website for the spring 2023 deeping mapping class. One of my favorite things to do during my childhood was to look at the maps on the walls of my grandma’s home. That was the first time I got a sense of what the world looks like, and where I am located. During those summers I spent in my grandma’s hometown, I often imagined myself flying to various parts of the world and experiencing life in different places with different people. My grandma lived in a small county deep inside the mountains, which is several hundred kilometers from the city I live in, but I did feel I am more connected to the world from the small bedroom of my grandma’s home than I did in the big city. It is, of course, just a childhood fantasy, but it indeed sparks my first curiosity about the world I live in, from the mountains surrounding my grandma’s hometown in China to the great plains in the US.
