In an effort to recreate the experiences I have had driving through the Dennison quadrangle, I have attempted to create two different games using the Unity game development platform. The first, suitably named Dennison Driving Tour, places the user within a game located on top of a layered satellite image of the quadrangle. As such, the user is then able to drive around on top of the map, in some senses experiencing the feeling of driving through the quadrangle in real life. The second game, also cleverly named, is the Dennison Flying Tour. In this game, the user begins on the runway of the Stanton airfield. From there they are able to take off and fly over the entire quadrangle (and beyond). In both games, POI markers designate three places talked about in the previous pages, and enable the user to see the sites from two different perspectives. Granted, my ability to deliver a truly immersive, three-dimensional experience of the quadrangle is not entirely possible, but the concepts I have attempted to realize do have substantial potential for deep mapping. In addition to driving and flying, the Unity platform also supports games which the character is on foot. With some more expertise and more time, Unity offers both creators and users many possibilities for the development of a more full understanding of place. Although my attempt to do so is not the pinnacle of this approach, by any stretch of the imagination, using Unity in deep mapping holds great untapped potential.
