Taking the Next Step

Welcome to the new CONGLOMERATE group, focusing on the Arb!

(The more the merrier!)

First, we looked at what we have done:

-All the Arb documents in one folder in Google Docs

-All Arb documents sorted by decade and type

-A good start on metadata for documents

Then, we figured out what we still have to do:

Now that we are a merry conglomerate, our project looks a little different, not to mention a little harder to keep everyone on the same page for. However, we know we will be building an Omeka website inspired by a website about the Smithsonian National Mall, with interactive maps, timelines, or other data analysis.

Next Steps:

-Joseph is going to set up our Omeka website and read through the process the Smithsonian site went through to see what we can replicate.

-Each person will read and sort through their delegated decades and create a timeline of the major trends of the decade.

-Each person is responsible for gathering metadata for about a dozen documents.

Looking farther:

On Sunday, we will discuss each person’s project and delegate. Then, we will have a week to carry out our analysis project and compile them into Joseph’s Omeka platform. Then, we will rehearse and then present our project.

  1. This sounds like a good start on the refined plan. The Smithsonian site you are using as your model used Maps, People, and Explorations (i.e. Omeka Exhibits) as it’s key categories. You could easily add a Timelines section to that (or swap it out for people if you don’t have enough to justify a dedicated category).

As I mentioned in class, I think finding thematic “Explorations” through your corpus of documents will be much more useful and compelling than having a series of disconnected decade-by-decade pieces.

Let me know if you have any questions or need further assistance.

  2. Nice! I like how the current/finnished tasks are clearly defined and that the future tasks are listed out as well.

I noticed the following blurb in the post:

our project looks a little different, not to mention a little harder to keep everyone on the same page for

Going forward, how will y’all keep everyone in the loop?

  3. I really like the group name. I think you all have a great plan, and I can’t wait to see what the final product will be.
