Class Project Update and Final Project Work

Congrats on completing your midterm mini-projects! They look great so far and I’ll be giving you detailed feedback by Tuesday, posted in Moodle.

We’ll start class with a debrief of the process and your reactions and/or questions about how to apply any insights going forward.

Class Project Update and catching up on past work

I’ve thrown a lot at you this term, in a different format than you’re probably used to, so let’s take stock and make sure you are all caught up.

Here are the assignments that you should have completed so far:

1.1 SketchUpHouse Post
1.2 WhyDH Post
2.1 ReverseEngineer Post
2.2 Coding Post
3.1 Personal Site Setup and Post
3.2 Building Research Images in Google Drive
4.1 Building Omeka Exhibit
4.2 WebMap Post
5.2 Clean Building STL
6.1 Final Project Pitch

The numbers correspond to the Labs in the menu above where the assignment is spelled out. Log in to this site and check your author history to make sure you have all your posts published.

The bolded entries above are especially crucial since they are needed to complete our class project.

  • Make sure all your building images are in Omeka as Items
  • Make sure you have created a Building Exhibit that contains the following:
    • A few sentences of history on the building and its present use
    • All your Image items
    • Your name in the Credits field
  • Make sure you have uploaded your STL to the appropriate folder in the 3D Printing shared drive folder

Final Project pitches

Now that you have mounted a mini-project from start to finish, today we going to use class time to make progress on your more ambitious and original final projects.

Check in with your group members and draft your pitch post for the final project.

Final Project Assignment 1 — The Pitch

Now that you’ve had some time to research and figure out what the possibilities are in terms of sources and technologies, write a blog post on the course blog tagged with your project stating the following:

Form a group of 3-4 and chose or invent a project.  Collectively write a blog post on the course blog, stating the following:

  • Members of the group
  • The definition of the project topic and objectives for what you plan to produce
  • The proposed methodology:
    • What data do you hope to use and how do you hope to find it?
    • What tools and techniques will you use to gather sources and store your data?
    • What analyses or transformations will you conduct on those data?
    • How will you present the results and integrate the digital assets you create as an interactive final product?
  • The proposed timeline of deliverables
  • And finally, a link to one or more DH projects that you think might make a good model for what you plan to do.

Create a unique tag for your group to tag all your posts going forward.

On your own blogs, write a brief message outlining your personal interests in the projects and what you hope it will achieve, and link to it from the group’s post
