Update on our LGBT Timeline Project

Members: Saahithi Rao and Alief Moulana

Progress

We talked to Sarah Calhoun with the Digital Archives about resources that might be useful for our project, how to access the physical archives, and proper ways to both use and cite the digital sources we will be using. We also reached out to Laura Haave with the GSC and she gave us access to a project and resources that they are currently working on about LGBT and related events at Carleton. It gave us ideas of events that we could investigate further in Carleton’s very recent history.

We have looked extensively through and gathered articles from the Carletonian. Using this information and information provided by the GSC, we have started building a timeline.

Problems (and proposed solutions)

We have run into issues with finding media that is digitized. Currently, we are taking screen shots and uploading them to our google folder to get a link for the timeline. We also hope to search through the algol yearbooks and the LGBT newsletter on the digital archives.

We have also come to realize that the Carletonian search engine is not the most effective when trying to search for something specific. The change in word association of terms associated with LGBT has also changed throughout the decades making it even trickier. For example, LGBT, used to just be LGB, then GLBT, and so on. Getting a better idea of what terms were used at different time periods just by searching will help us gather more effective information.

Tools and techniques

We are using Timeline JS and a little html coding to link articles and pictures to the timeline through the template excel spreadsheet.

Timeline:

  1. Data Collection: Visit Carleton archive and GSC and collect other sources of information (by February 17th)
  2. Data Storing: Digitize all of our data, creating a catalog (by February 23rd)
  3. Create Timeline (by February 28th)
  4. Results: Present the timeline, edit the blog and website, and create presentation (by March 4th)
  5. Final Polish/Draft (by March 7th)

We have finished step 1 and are on track to finish step 2 by our deadline.

Take a look at our timeline so far!
